Roulette History

Perhaps you have been to a land based casino or seen the ga,e on tv or played it on the computer. In anycase, there tends to always be a crowd that gathers by the roulette table either to play or watch others playing the game.... the game of chance. Did you ever stop to wonder... hmmm who ever invented the game roulette? where was the roulette game invented?

Roulette is a game of chance that has been around for such a long time that its history to some extent remain unclear and still to this day discussed. Where the Roulette game originated ... conceived ... no one knows for certain. There seems to be evidence to suggest that it was france and in the early seventeenth century by a mathematician.. yes french mathematicain called Blaise Pascal.

The word roulette is french for "small wheel". Games involving wheels have been around since donkey years ;).. really they have been around for milleniums. to put it into more perspective, the Roman soldiers played wheel games by tipping chariots and then spinning the wheels, turns out to be a popular activity between campaigns. Others claim it was introduced to europe by monks who traded with the chinese merchants. In anycase, back to roulette... it is agreed upon that the french are responssible for evolving the game, a game that grew in popularity to later invade europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth century. It was most popular in France and Monte Carlo.

So, 1700s, the first modern day Roulette wheel with the black and red spaces originated, even in france. This wheel featured two zeroes on it, interestingly enough that game is now known as American wheel and not the European one.?!?! The European wheel... european roulette, with a single zero, was not invented until later in 1842 by the Blanc brother, Louis and Francois.

In the 18th century Prince charles of Monaco introduced the popular game to his kingdom in hopes that it would revert the economic distress the kingdom was facing.

Roulette arrived to the US but the casinos had changed the odds in their favor and would pay much smaller odds... this proceeded until the gambler/players realized what was going on and stopped playing. The casinos then introduced the double zero roulette wheel with better odds to regain the customers..... so here you have it the reason why it is called American roulette... its because they ruined the reputation of european roulette and adopted another european roulette wheen but called it american roulette :) Now im confused as well.

Today the roulette game is known to most anyone, it is an internationally recognized game of glamour, excitement, and part of any casino in any state in any country. The most common variations of the game are American Roulette and European Roulette differing in rules and payouts. The roulette game can be one way to win big if you are willing to do a 50 / 50 chance.... many high rollers tend to test their luck. Some leave happy other manage to wipe a away a good chunk of their balace.
